Zippermouth Lake-Quiet and Warm-July16

Paul Fighting a Nice One! Oops! It's heading under the boat! Looking to NNW corner Looking SSE

For a while now I have been telling my friend Paul about Zippermouth Lake... it's a very small trout lake (unnamed on a map) in the Kamloops area. At one time it gave up a 27" rainbow to a nymph pattern that I was casting a retrieving on the smaller of it's 2 shoals.

I have introduced a few people to the lake and more often than not, me and my partners are the only ones on the lake. This day was to be like that too, except that there was no 27" rainbow to be seen.

We hit the water at about 3pm... the major feed was to be around 5:30pm. Not much moving on the surface, water temp 68F, wind off and on and one obnoxious loon. He was right there to greet us as soon as we hit the water.

Paul went counter-clockwise around to the far side and I went clockwise. In the first hour he got into one small fish and lost it. We moved around some more and Paul anchored in front of the second boat launch/campsite where he started having some luck on small green chironomids. He pumped one of the fish and it had lots of little green chironomids, one bomber chironomid and couple of hyalella shrimp.

When I found out what they were eating I changed my flies (I was using micro-leech on one rod and a #12 chromie on the other) and got into my one and only fish for the day.
It was all of 13". Paul caught a few more, including surrendering one to the loon and then they just seemed to shut off.

KJ and his friend Craig showed up for the evening fish. Paul left around 8pm. Nothing much was hatching and we were seeing very few fish on our fish finders. KJ had a couple of tugs and Craig lost a nice 2lb+ fish that made his reel scream and took some air a few times. It was the most excitement of the day. I ended up shutting it down at around 8:30pm while KJ and Craig fished for another 45 minutes before they headed ashore.

It was a beautiful evening except the lack of production... at this rate... I can't wait until fall.
