ZipperMouth Lake - a Fall Jewel

KJ Casting a Line at ZipperMouth

Ah, the ol' ZipperMouth Lake.

You know, everyone has their favorite "secret lake" and yours truly has one too. I have shared this location with only a few. KJ is one of them. He actually drops in there more often than I do.

As you can see by the picture, it was a beautiful day.
ZipperMouth Lake gave up a 27" fish to me a few years ago. That's why I like to go back. No bigger than 10 acres, the location of ZipperMouth Lake will remain just that, my secret lake. I will say that it is one of the many Kamloops Area Lakes, only 55 minutes from North Kamloops.

KJ and I took the opportunity visit on a sunny but cold Thanksgiving Saturday. The air temperature was no more than 1C as we were getting ice our guides when we were retrieving our casts.

KJ had been at Zippermouth Lake the week before and did quite well. I didn't know what to expect this day as the temperature had taken a sudden drop over the last few days. Surface temperature was 47F.

The water was quiet, like a mirror, at 3pm when we arrived. I think I only saw one or two fish rise while we did up our lines and unloaded our boats. Another boat showed up for a couple of hours but they left an hour before we did.

I decided to try a holo-red booby fly on a sinking line. To my delight, I was into my first fish about 100ft from the launch. It was a nice 14" silver bullet that took the booby deep into it's throat. I ended up having to keep the fish because the hook damaged the gills.

Things were pretty bleak for catching fish the rest of the outing. KJ got a couple (one on a booby and one on a small spratley). I landed another smallish fish around 5pm and that was it for the day. As the sun disappeared behind the mountain, the air got very cold and our lines and anchor ropes were getting frozen stiff.

Not sure whether we will try getting back out there this year but you can bet that it will be on our list again for next year.
