Understanding Wetlands

A WETLAND INFO HANDBOOK FOR
BRITISH COLUMBIA'S INTERIOR

Written for Ducks Unlimited Canada, Understanding Wetlands is a superb reference book for wetland info specifically targeted in the BC Interior. Author Bruno Delesalle gives insight into the relationship of existing wetland infrastructure that can be used to develop wetland managment practices . He constructs an educational picture of wetlands in a field compatible handbook for the average person, enthusiast or professional to understand and use.

The Interior Wetlands Program is a partnership between Ducks Unlimited Canada and Environment Canada. The program was initiated in 1992 as part of the Fraser River Action Plan. The Interior Wetlands Program has developed demonstration projects and has provided information to encourage the stewardship of British Columbia's Wetlands. This beautifully organized book is full of coloured pictures of wetlands and it's inhabitants, easy to understand diagrams, tables and text that illustrates wetlands as the diverse, important ecological system it is.

Here are the major wetland info topics covered in the book

1) Understanding Your Wetland - Identifies the 3 principal zones within and surrounding the wetland complex of water, soil and air and their interaction with biological elements such as plants, animals and other living organisms. Understanding the basic element of wetland ecology and the needs of wildlife can help us to better manage land use to ensure healthy and properly functioning weland and riparian systems

2) Aquatic and Other Wetland Plants - emergent and submergent plants, how they sustain and reproduce. As well as identifying the plants, the book includes important information for each plant identified such as: What does it look like?; Where can it be found?; Ecological and Agricultural Significance; and Potential Look-alikes.

3) Riparian Plants - The Riparian Zones is identified as the transitional zone between the wetland and the drier uplands. This transitional zone produces it's own distinct vegetation. Riparian plants play a significant role in maintaining the health of the wetland in terms of stabilizing wetland edges, filtering agricultural and urban deposits, and provides essential shelter, breeding and foraging areas for wildlife.

4) Wetlands and Wildlife - A remarkable variety of mammals, birds, amphibians, reptiles, fish and invertibrates depend on wetlands for water, food, breeding and protective cover. The book identifies resident and seasonal species, their habits and their primary and secondary food sources in easy-to-read text and tables.

5) Wetlands and Our Future - a short chapter regarding wetlands and the keys to sustaining healthy landscapes.

6) Resources for Land Managers - Outlines publications, government agencies and organizations where other wetland and riparian information is available.

7) Glossary / References - A detailed list of related words and terms with brief definitions.
