Teddy Lands a Big One! (and then releases it)
My friend Paul Patterson invited me to join him up at Six Mile Lake on Saturday. When I got there, he and mutual fishing friend, Ted Elder, were already anchored in the middle of the lake.
The major feed period was real early in the morning and I chose not to be there... nothing lost, no one was catching anything yet.
There was a light north east breeze creating a gentle chop on the surface. Some small midges were hatching but not much else was moving. Tex and Ted were trying a variety chironomids. I started off slowly trolling a booby on a sinking lines. As headed out to the middle of the lake I had two pulls but no fish. My fish finder was beeping like crazy in areas so I decided to anchor and cast. I started a slow sinking line on one side and a dry line w/ indicator on the other. It was the dry line that took the first 2 fish, both on a small holo-green chironomids. The fish were smaller than normal, averaging about 14 inches but they were fat little guys. I stomach pumped one of the fish and found a bunch of grey and black chironies and a water boatman.
Just after I got my first fish, Ted and Paul started hitting fish too. It wasn't too long when Ted hooked into a whopper using a grey chironomid with a black rib. The fish ran line out a number of times and came out of the water twice. It must have taken him nearly 10 minutes to land it. Ted said that the fish had a bunch of water boatman in the big fish's throat and gills.
Tex got into a couple of nice fish too, the largest coming in at around 3 1/2 lbs.
It was a spotty day. We caught most of our fish near or during the minor feed period in the early afternoon. Tex and I each got approx. 5 fish to the boat, while Ted seemed to get a few more.
