Six Mile Lake - Oct 17 & 18

Wayne Murphy at Six Mile Lake

Our friends, Wayne and Adrienne of Penticton, joined us for mid-fall weekend at Tobiano. Tobiano, the golf course resort on Kamloops Lake is a short 10 minute drive from Six Mile Lake and 12 minutes from Morgan Lake. A perfect location for a weekend get-away.

Saturday:

Wayne and I wanted to get out early on Saturday but the weather would have no part of it. It was raining cats and dogs. It finally started to let up around 2pm so we assembled our gear in our dry garage and headed up the hill.

There was a little drizzle here and there and a steady supply of low cloud that arrived as fog but for the most part, it was a comfortable afternoon. The fishing on the other hand, was quite slow.

We had both set up a sinking line and a dry line with a strike indicator. There were some small fish rising when we arrived but that didn't last long. We started dragging our wet lines and alternated with anchoring and casting.

I caught my first fish casting a Holo-Red Booby Fly. It hit hard but, because the water temperature was so cool (45F), the fish had very little fight. A couple of hours later I hit a nice 17" fish, this time drift/trolling the same booby fly at the east end of the lake. That was it for the day. Wayne had a few bites but nothing he could call a strike.

Sunday:

Although there was some low cloud early, the weather was quite hospitable. When we arrived up at Six Mile Lake, just after 9am, the air was warming, the sun was peaking through the clouds and the wind was calm.

We both set up the same wet lines, except Wayne chose another booby fly. But we did change the way we intended to use our dry lines. This time we decided to go with no strike indicator and a long leader so that we could drift through the shallow west end. The strategy paid off. I got my first fish about 15 minutes after we hit the water. I was dragging a cream colored damsel with gold tinsel in the maribou tail. It's a pattern that I did well with last year in this lake.

Another 10 minutes passed before Wayne and I got a double header. The fish hit our flies almost on queue. They weren't big fish but it's always cool to get a double header. Shortly after (no, immediately after)I caught my next fish just as I straightened out my line.

After a dry spell of about 20 minutes we found some fish (on the fish finder) out from the concrete water control structure. The fish were at about 10' - 11' in 15ft of water. After casting the dry line for a few minutes, we decided to change to the wet line again. Although fish rising to the surface were far and few between, one nice fish finally rose within my casting distance. I quickly gathered in my wet line and cast the Holo-Red Booby in the general area, let it sink for only about 10 seconds and started a fast retrieve. I had bites 2 casts in a row and finally on the third cast I got it to bite & take. I could tell right away that it was a bigger fish than what we had caught earlier. It ended up being just short of 17" and real chunky.

That was the last fish that I got on the cast and Wayne got one a little later. I did end up getting 2 more nice sized fish drifting the booby fly. Wayne caught 2 more fish, one on a booby and one on a brown leech.

The weather was almost flawless and we had to get off early so that Wayne and his bride could get back to Penticton by the time the sun went down. We kept our 4 fish this day and they will probably be bound for the Xmas smoker.
