Six Mile Lake near Tobiano BC Mar 18, 2010

Six Mile Lake - March 2010

Six Mile Lake - March 2010

Some days some guys just shouldn't get out of bed.

Went out to Six Mile Lake to fish the afternoon with two business and personal friends and get some pictures.

I took my time gearing up and when I decided to put the electric motor on I discovered that my battery was still sitting in my basement. Looks like I was going to have to row this day and go without my depth sounder/fish finder.

Mike Porco, the golf pro at Tobiano Golf who is also an experienced fly fisherman, was going to be testing a new rod built by mutual friend, Paul Patterson. We will be featuring the rods built by Paul and have them for sale in the near future. A third friend, and no stranger to this site, was Teddy Elder.

Mike showed up a little later than everyone else and actually jumped in with Paul.
We were all anchored and casting to the north shore just east of the water control structure in the dam.

Things were pretty slow for everyone, only a few fish caught. The solunar tables had the major feed period from 2:45pm to 4:45pm. Things didn't really start happening until after 3pm when a few fish were caught on a green bloodworm. You could actually see the little buggers wiggling around in the water column a couple of feet below the surface. Teddy got into a decent fish, just over a couple of pounds.

Mike, who showed up just in the nick of time for the feed, set up his new rod with a dry line, a small green shrimp and a strike indicator because they were fishing 5'-7'deep water. It didn't take long for him to start hitting fish. Both Paul and Teddy were getting the odd fish too, but they were missing more than they were landing. The fish were not hitting the flies hard, just slurping and spitting.

I really wanted to get some pictures of Paul and Mike so I pulled out my camera and when I went to shoot my pics, the camera kindly let me know that I had left my photo disk at home on my desk.

Mike didn't stay long as he was satisfied with the performance of his new rod (there was a substantial wind during the afternoon that could have made things difficult) and had to get back to the golf course. Paul and Teddy left moved further west and the feed started to come on again. The last 15 minutes of the major feed was fairly active, with everyone on the lake hitting some fish. I ended up with 4 fish during the feed period, 1 on a booby fly, 2 on a green bloodworm and 1 on a green hyalella shrimp.

Paul and Teddy left around 5:30pm when the bite dried up and I hung around a little longer. There was one guy in a belly boat hanging around out near the control structure and he was hitting a few fish.

I tried drifting through the shallows near the west end of the lake as the sun went down but the wind was not cooperating. I got one hit but nothing to the boat and called it a day.
