Six Mile Lake July 10

KJ Enjoying the Waning Sunlight A Classic 6 Mile Lake Sunset

KJ got back from holidays from Saskatchewan on Friday and we hooked up on Saturday for an evening fish at Six Mile Lake. Although the wind was blowing in the valley, it was reasonable at the lake (it wasn't a nasty east wind).

KJ hit the water just before me and I was on almost exactly at 7pm. There was to be a feed period from 7:30 to 8:30 so I got on in time. KJ headed toward the middle of the lake and I followed shortly after. We both had 2 lines in the water... I was fishing an Irish Green Booby fly that my friend Kevin McGuire (from Ireland) gave me last year when they were fishing at Roche Lake. My other line was a dry line c/w strike indicator and a micro-leech. I was anticipating some action in the shallows a little later. KJ was using 2 dry lines, one with a strike indicator. I'm not sure what he had on for a fly.

With a stretch of hot weather over the last week or so, the water temperature was a warm 73F and I didn't expect much action. I was locating fish on my fish finder in some of the usual spots and the fish were down between 9ft and 14ft in 17-18ft of water... as soon as one wandered into shallower water the fish all but disappeared.

Not long after I migrated into the deeper water I hit my first fish... on the Booby Fly. It was about 14" and put up a good fight for about 1 minute then it gave in to the heat and the pulling of the rod. It didn't take long to revive him and he was on his way.

KJ and I both anchored in an area that fit the above description and he started getting fish too. I got another fish (15") on my Booby fly (the fish really swallowed it this time) and I was forced to keep it because it was going to die anyway. KJ landed 4 fish, mostly small fish but at least we were getting some action.

After the minor feed was over we both went to dragging our lines around, looking for moving fish. As the sun set behind the dry hills the wind slowed a bit and the fish were starting to rise. I ran my boat down the north edge while KJ worked the south shore. I had lots of bumps on the micro - leech and caught one smaller fish. KJ started heading into shore about 9:45pm but there was still enough light for me to try my usual cruise over the shoal on the south shore across from the boat launch... I usually get something there and sure enough, on my over I hit the last fish of the night. It was about the same as the first one I kept so I returned it to the water.

The mosquitoes were horrific as I brought my boat in just after 10pm. I had shorts on and I was getting eaten to death. KJ was in shorts too and we both forgot the bug dope... needless to say, the memory of the mosquitoes is still outweighing the memory of a rather unexpectedly productive hot July evening.
