22.5" Rainbow Trout caught on a Booby Fly
An evening at Six Mile Lake
Either Tuesday or Wednesday of this week was going to be my evening to fish. I called up KJ he was interested in Tuesday only as he was booked on Wed. So, Tuesday it was and we decided on something close. It was either going to be Six Mile or Morgan depending on the wind. I arrived first and decided that 6 Mile was the preferred target.
There were two other fishermen on the lake, one guy was anchored in the bay in front of the rock face and the other was milling around in a float tube. There was a southwest humming along but not too bad on the lake. I headed toward the middle of the lake, close to the guy that was anchored and I started picking up a lot of fish on my fish finder so I also decided to anchor. KJ followed shortly thereafter and he anchored in the same area, closer to the south shore and little more sheltered.
The water was quiet. The usual families of coots and ducks were milling around, not much for bird action in the sky or insect action on the water for that matter. I chose to hook up my intermediate line with a damsel and a floating line c/w strike indicator and another damsel. It didn't take long until I snapped my leader casting my intermediate line and lost the damsel. I replaced it with a small red bodied booby.
The guy just over from us was friendly enough and he got into a couple of fish with one about 17" or so. We struck up a conversation and discovered that we had a mutual friend.
Not long after I put the booby fly on, I had a hit. Next cast I had a hit too and then finally on the 3rd time, I landed a small fish that had plenty of fight. KJ asked me what I was using, I told him and I guess he put a booby on too because after a couple of minutes, he was into a nice fish too. A real nice one as it came in at 22 1/2 inches... and nice and deep too.
I had one more hit on the booby, just after I had cast it out and laid the rod down while I cleaned my net. I had my hands off the rod long enough to miss the fish.
Neither of us had any more luck after that. The wind picked up and I did too as I skirted to the west end of the lake to drag a damsel over the weeds using a dry line with a long leader but I didn't have any luck.
We came off the lake at last light without any more action and one nice fish. I can't help taking some satisfaction in the fish that KJ caught... I tied the booby he used to catch it.
