Silent Lake Remains Silent - Sept 4, 2009

by Mr BFSH
(Kamloops)

KJ found a lake on the government stocking site that was above Pritchard (north) and had been stocked for the previous 3 years. After reviewing the location of the lake on Google Earth, he invited me to come up with him and give it a try.

The lake is along Warren Road (Road 4100) and is just a button of a lake. I remember it years ago when I used to hunt deer in the area but it was inaccessible at that time. It appears that local logging efforts enabled a drive-able trail into the lake but let me tell you, the launch was tough. It would really suck if you were trying it with a belly boat as you would sink into mud up to your arse.

The lake looked to be about 4ha with very little shoal area. It reminded me of Madden Lake near Oliver. The bottom disappeared to about 40ft in no time. Looking into the water, I have never seen so many water boatman... little ones, but thousands of them.

There were also 2 loons on the lake that gave us some hope but as we drifted around we had but 3 small fish show up on the fish finder in 2 hours. No bites, no rises, even the loons weren't feeding. That was enough for us so we packed it in about 4:40pm and decided to slip over to Pemberton Lake near Hyas lake.

Pemberton Lake must be a reservoir for downstream irrigation because when we arrived, the water was so low that you couldn't possibly launch a boat of any kind. So much for our afternoon of fishing.

We headed down the hill and stopped at Pinantan Lake just to find the public accesses. We found 2 of the three. We also stopped at Pinantan Lake Resort and had a good chat with the lodge owner, Brad Watson.

Again, it was another poor day in early September while the weather is in transition from summer to fall. I'm certainly looking forward to seeing some frost and the gorgeous Indian summer that annually brings on a an onslaught of hatches and frenzies of feeding rainbow trout.

Hyas Lake region

Wondering if all those other pothole lakes off of Warren Rd. are stocked or not? Whether one could even get into them?

Didn't sound like a good day out on the water. Pemberton is a nice lake when you can actually launch a boat. Mostly small fish that come readily to any offering. I've landed a few just over 3lbs. in the last couple years. I recall the lake being 50ft. deep in places!!

reply...

Yes I've fished Pemberton (quite a few years ago) and it had lots of 1-2lb fish. I was somewhat shocked at the water level when I saw it last week. I don't know if the pothole on the way up is stocked... haven't heard that it was. There are fish in Hadlow lake at the far end of Hyas... I've been in there only once.

The access points are just that. There does not seem to be any rec facilities at these locations.

I really can't say how big the average fish is. I have heard that the fish can be small but there are some 3 lb+ babies in there. When the fishing is 'on', it is easy to limit out on the small ones.

Pinatan question
by: Ron W

Are those public access points to Pinatan Lake recreation sites or just spots to pull over?

What's the average size of the fish in Pinatan? I haven't been there in years but I remember the lake as being full of small ones.
