Dave Fighting Another Rainbow
On May 25th my buddy Dave and I went to Batstone Lake for a day of fishing. The lake is located on the Aspen Grove / Princeton hwy just down from Kidd Lake. The weather was overcast with a few sunny spots thrown in. The wind was a little uncooperative.
This private lake is a small but productive lake with some good size rainbow in it. It has good shoals and weed beds that hold a lot of fish.
We started in along the NE weed bed by the boat decks but soon found ourselves fishing in the SW end where the wind couldn't get us.
Dave started fishing the shallows (4ft depth) using chironomids. He landed a few nice fish so, like any other friend would do, I joined him in my boat. I tried a few different flies but settled on a "may fly" pattern. I started catching a few with one being around the 6 lb range---he got away when he entered the weed bed and smartly did a few figure eights around some weeds.
Dave had a least 4 break him off---they say they get to 12 lbs in this lake--maybe.
All this said and done the day was pretty good with a few fish (rainbow)in the 5 to 7 lb range. In all I'd say we caught 25 to 30 that day.
This is a good lake and I would recommend it to anyone.
