Red Lake Sept 13 2009

A Nice Feed of Brookies

A Nice Feed of Brookies

I finally decided to go back to Red Lake. After total failure there the last 3 times that I visited, I was talked into in trying again by my buddy KJ. We took two boats up on his truck, arriving around 10 am. Brad Arner joined us just before we hit the water.

It was a gorgeous morning and the fish were rising just in front of the boat launch. KJ and I both set up 3 rods, a dry, an intermediate and full sinker. I put an orange booby on my full sinker and started dragging that around while I was trying to find some fish. It wasn't 10 minutes before I hit my first brookie and after another minutes, I landed another. Both fish were only about 13" but nice and fat. Both were released thinking that this was going to be an abundant day.

KJ and Brad anchored just west of the little island at the south end of the lake and KJ quickly got into a couple of fish on a black micro-leech. Brad was anchored a little closer to the shore and he was having trouble getting any action at all. I joined them after drifting around the shallows and it took me another 2 hours before I landed another. The bite seemed to go off for a couple of hours.

Brad had to leave around 1pm. KJ went exploring down the lake and I decided to go back to the area where I hit my first 2 fish. The booby wasn't doing well so I tied on a cream coloured damsel with a gold rid. There were lots of fish showing up in the deep water (22'+) but the fish were at all levels. It seemed like every time I drifted through a certain area, I got a bite and if I was lucky, a fish.

I ended up catching 8 fish and every fish was almost the same size. The fish that I caught later in the day seemed to fight better than the earlier ones.

KJ finished off the day in the same area and caught one or 2 more fish.

We both agreed that we would go back to try and find some bigger fish.

The brookies were great table fare. I had one for dinner that night and served more fish to company the next night. I even had some snack food for the next couple of days.
