Red Lake Late Fall Fishing Nov10.2010

Red Lake - 5 lb Rainbow - KJ

Red Lake - 5 lb Rainbow - KJ

KJ and I ventured up to Red Lake this last week. The road between in Kamloops Lake and the Tranquille River Campsite was a little tricky as there was some black ice patches that had the potential to put one in a scary situation.

We arrived at the lake around 10am and we decided to put in at Strom Point. There were 2 other vehicles parked there when we arrived.

The conditions were overcast but calm with a temperature of about 5-6C. Ken was on the water first and went over to the back side of the big island. I had some line issues to clean up so I was about 20 minutes behind him. By the time I caught up to him he had a nice 5lb rainbow in the boat... he caught it on an pumpkin head.

I rowed around the shoreline behind and around the island. I finally spotted a large school of brook trout cruising through the shallows. I found a place to anchor and put an orange booby fly. On my first cast I hooked a healthy 2.5lb+ brookie that put up a pretty good scrap. About 5 casts later I got into another brook trout, but a little smaller than the first one.

Things slowed for a while and I saw another school float through behind me so I through my line out in that direction and let the line sink to the bottom. The fish hit late in the retrieve, just as it was coming up the water column. It turned out to be a 3lb 7oz male brook trout that measured out at 17 3/4 inches.

Ken hadn't caught anything after his nice rainbow but he heard me catching mine. Things slowed significantly so we talked about heading to the south end of the lake. As we drift along the south-west shore of the island, we saw quite a few more fish swimming along the weed beds about 15ft from shore so we decided to stay in the middle of the lake. The came up a bit and changed so I headed back to the other side of the island while KJ headed over to the mainland shore.

I did not have any more luck the rest of the afternoon but KJ did manage to hook a couple more brook trout, one exactly the same weight as my nice one... only his was a female.

We fished almost until dark (which is 4:45 at this time of year). Although the sun didn't show it's face much, it was a pleasant enough day for some fine fall fly fishing at Red Lake, BC.

I love Red Lake and I enjoyed your post. However, you should know that there are only female brook trout stocked in this lake.
