Although Wayne and I have been fishing buddies for over 30 years, until this day, we had never been "ice fishing" together.

We had been talking about it as Wayne has done a number of ice fishing jaunts over to the Cranbrook area with our mutual friend, Steve. And because we enjoyed splendid fishing at Red Lake during the open water season AND the lake contains both big fat brookies and rainbows that resemble hogs... we thought that it was a great place to start.

We got off to a late start and arrived at the lake around 11 am. We were going to put in at the marsh, on the main road beside the two new cabins for sale at mid lake near the island. As we were gearing up and trying to decide where to put our holes down, a couple of guys came off the lake where we were parked. They were headed home already and one guy had his limit of medium sized, fat eastern brook trout. The other guy said he caught a few small ones but didn't keep any. They were nice enough to tell us where there holes were punched in and said that we were welcome to use them. Our minds were made up quickly (they dug 8" holes while we only had a 6" auger).

It was almost noon before we trudged over to the spot, cleared the holes, got our lines baited up and started fishing. One disappointment was that the ice was too thick for the fish finder (20" of ice... only 18" of shaft for the sensor). I wasn't too long before Wayne was into his first fish... a small brookie but it was at least a hint that there were fish around.

But that was it. Most people were gone by 1pm... a few trickled on to the lake around mid-afternoon but we didn't see much success anywhere else in our area of the lake. I don't know what was going on at the south end or if the guys that were slugging through the snow/slush from the north end narrows had much luck. The weather changed quite suddenly between 1 and 2pm from sunny and warm to overcast and cool with a slight breeze.

We came off the lake about 3:45 with an empty pail but it was a pretty nice day otherwise.
