Morgan Lake - Kamloops

Best Fly Fishing Lakes in BC

After re-opening as a catch-and-release only fishery in 2005, Morgan Lake is a new comer to the list as one of the best fly fishing lakes in BC. Just 35 kms from downtown Kamloops BC and only a few kilometers from Tobiano, the new golf community resort located on Kamloops Lake at the 6 Mile Ranch.

Morgan - West entrance

Morgan Lake is a low elevation lake on the 6 Mile Lake road. It can be accessed from the west via Tunkwa Lake Road about 1.2 kilometers south of the TransCanada Hwy at Savona. It may also be accessed from the east, just by the new real estate development on Kamloops Lake, Tobiano. With construction ensuing in the spring, this access is mostly to be disrupted and re-routed in the future.

Spring Action: 2 rods = 2fish

Morgan has been stocked with triploid rainbow trout for the last couple of years. In that time, they have grown to average 20" to 21" and close to 5 lbs. They are little hogs. There were also some rainbows stocked in the spring of 2006. At the time they were 10"-11". By the time October rolled by this group of fish have grown to 15" to 16".

Obviously the growth has been prolific. The fishing, although rarely prolific, was steady in 2006, producing every month from April to November. These fish tend to be a little less acrobatic but are extremely strong and like to hold your fly down near the bottom.

Structurally it differs from most lakes as it is an old reservoir with very little in the way of marl shoals. The lake bottom tends to drop quickly from the outside the shoreline bullrushes. The east end of the lake and around the back of the island are probably the best areas to find shoal areas of 15ft or less. A good bulk of the lake has a 20'-25' bottom with deep holes in the middle of the west end up to 45'.

Even though this lake is catch and release only, it is not 'fly only'. Nor does it have any boating restrictions. During the busier times you can find people trolling with small lures. There is a bait ban and a single barbless hook restriction.

Flies of Choice:

  • The green and black leech appeared to be productive most of the year.
  • Chironimids in the spring to mid-summer. Try chromies in the spring.
  • Micro-leeches - #12-green in particular to imitate small damsels from late spring to late summer
  • the Modified Booby(see picture) - wide gap heavy hooks size 8-12. Nymph or leech pattern, white or grey boobies. Excellent in the late fall on a deep sinking line.

    Facilities:

None really although there is an old outhouse at the west end. Some people chose to camp in rough areas around the lake however there is a courtesy sign posted by the local Fish and Game club to discourage overnight camping. The accesses at both ends of the lake are good for small boats, float tubes and pontoon boats. The east end tends to get a bit weedy later in the year making the west end more popular.

    Nearby Lakes:

6 Mile Lake, Tunkwa and Leighton Lakes.
