McConnell Lake Sept 20 2007

My van is acting up on me so I didn't want to travel off road too much if I was to go fishing. McConnell Lake is right beside the old Kamloops-Logan Lake highway. My friend Ron W has had plenty of success there this year so I thought that I would give it a go. With an elevation of almost 4200 ft, I figured that a possibly waterboatman hatch might be possible.

It wasn't very busy when I arrive around 10am but the parking lot filled up soon after... mostly walkers and their dogs. There is a lovely trail around the lake that takes approx 1.5 hours to complete.

There were no hatches or fish showing anywhere when I arrived. The odd ripple let me know that there really was life in the lake. I headed over to the small islands and hardly picked up a fish on my fish finder. They just were not around. Anchoring and casting didn't help so again I went on the troll/drift. Still nothing.

I finally found a pocket of fish sitting in 30ft of water and the fish were suspended at around 22'-26'. I got 3 little nibbles and no takes.

Discouraged by the lack of fish I crossed the lake to fish the SE shoreline which was lined with fallen trees and snags. I couldn't help noticing how deep the lake was, up to 84'on my depth sounder. There were some big fish sitting at around 65' but I didn't have an anchor rope that long so I continued to the far shore.

It didn't take too long to get into some small fish. If I had anchored I probably could have had a fish every cast but some of them were rrreally small. After about the 20th one, it was time to head home.

I must say that I am curious of why the lakes have been so slow the last few days... could it be the new moon?

McConnell mystifies NEW
by: Ron W

Although I had success there this spring, I've always found McConnell very tough to figure out in the fall.

I know you are a big believer in Solunar effects but I think the fall fishing has yet to pick up because the fish still think it's summer! We need a few nights of frost and colder water temps to get the fish feeding.

I was up in the LacLeJeune area today (Sept 22) and the waterboatman were starting to fly around. I don't think the fish have keyed in on them yet but it shouldn't be too much longer.

You are correct Ron... I was just talking with a friend of mine this morning about the fact that we need a frost to be a catalyst for both water insects and the fish to get into "indian summer mode". keep your fingers crossed, it's an El Nino year so we might be moving from summer to winter sometime in Nov.
