May 11, 2010 Early AM Duffy Lake

by Mike Porco
(Tobiano)

It has been a slow year to say the least for my fishing season to begin. I have had a few hours here and there, mostly at Six Mile when time permits but few and far between. Now that the weather seems to be warming up so should the hatches, I'm hoping.

I fished with my significant other on Mothers Day at Morgan Lake, the fishing was good on chironomids and she managed to land some beauties on her new fly rod set up... she was excited.

I am doing some research this week (fishing) on some productive lakes in the Kamloops area mostly in part that I have been informed we are shooting a Fins and Skins episode at Tobiano Golf Course with Henry W next week and I figured I had better get out so I know what is going on, on fishing side.

My good friend Paul Patterson told me he was at Duffy Lake last weekend and did well, so I started there this morning.

I arrived at Duffy at 6:30am and there wasn't a soul around. I was on the water by 6:50 and proceeded to the south end to see if I could see any fish moving, they were there as predicted. I dropped anchor in about 22 feet of water and cast a black/red chironomid under a strike indicator set at 16 feet. I put my rod down for a moment to organize my boat as I was rushing to get on the water, and when I looked up my indicator was nowhere to be found, I quickly retrieved the slack in my line and low and behold the fish was still on. Landed and released a nice chromer about 2 lbs, a very healthy fish.

I fished the same area for about an hour and had really good success landing 5 more and missing a few little takes, the biggest just over 3lbs. It was now 8:30 and I had to make my way back to the launch and get to work, my "research" was done. What a great outing before the office. Back to Morgan tomorrow morning.
