My "Bomber" Collection for Leighton & Tunkwa Lakes
July 20, 2010
After a great game of golf at the
Tobiano Golf Course with my nephew, I decided to make the relatively short trek up to Leighton Lake to see if the "Bomber" chironomid hatch had started.
I arrived at around 4pm but there was a wind blowing and it appeared to be picking up. With conditions less than admirable, I decided to have a quick nap in my truck... it was a warm, lazy day and I knew that the wind would die down eventually. After my nap and gearing up, I was on the water by 6:30pm.
The breeze was mostly coming in from the south but it had subsided substantially and I headed toward the bay in the north-east corner of the lake... if fish aren't biting in there, then I start to move around. There were a couple of guys in pontoon boats (I thought that I heard them say that they were from Oregon) and another gentleman that had been fishing the lake for the last 14 days. He was a great source of information.
the annual chironomid bomber hatch was just starting to show signs of resurrection... there was the odd casing on the water
the lake was fishing well in the shallows on damsels and dragons
small caddis were hatching in the evenings and fish were occasionally rising to a small Tom Thumb or similar pattern.
the fish were on a light smorgasbord... anything and everything but not enough to say that they were targeting anything specifically
the fish population was doing very well with lots of fish in the 2-3lb range, jumping all over the place... if they would only bite!!!
My first hour was unproductive... only one touch on my strike indicator line. I pulled up anchor and decided to oar-drift around the bay to try an locate more hungry fish. As the sun started getting close to the horizon, there was a flurry of action that lasted about 30-40 minutes in which I got 5 fish to the boat and lost 2 other real nice fish. 3 of the fish that I caught were small but the other 2 were definitely keepers, especially the 18"+ rainbow that hit my brown bomber chironomid w/gold rib and white head. It took a few runs and jumps before I was able to net him.
Not surprising was how exhausted the fish was when they finally give up (I remembered this from last year). I untangled my leader from the net, re-set my strike indicator and after I chucked the line back out, I returned to the fish to kill it and it was already dead.
Although I wasn't into lots of fish, it was good to know that I hadn't missed the bomber hatch. I'll be keeping an eye on the lake and will be sure to make a few trip to Leighton Lake and Tunkwa Lake over the next month.
