After checking the weather we decided to get one more shot at a Big Fish this year, as it has been a so-so year for us.
The Weather Channel said Kamloops was clear as we were getting pelted at the coast. So as per usual we left at 3:00AM grabbed our Timmy's and headed to a
new lake I found on this website that said there were 4 lb'ers in it.
Six inches of snow at the Toll Booth and then clear form Larson Hill to the lake. Good thing we have a 4x4 as it was definitely needed. We had to hack up a couple of Pine Beetle trees that had blown across the road. We arrived at the lake at 8:30 only to be greeted by a 30-40k wind from the south and a temperature of 2 degrees. We decided to give it a go and hit the lee side for shelter and take our lumps.
We bobbed around, (not too badly as we have Stabilisers on the 12 ft boat to keep us steady in the wind and when we are standing up casting or landing a fish)for a couple of hours trolling Pumpkin Heads, Leaches, and shrimp, without a nibble. Lots of big fish on the fishfinder but not the hungry ones I guess. Just as we were heading in for lunch my fishing bud got a fish on for few moments as a teaser.
We came in and had a bowl of soup and then it started to snow, with the wind it was ugly. We rested in the truck for an hour and said it would be a good idea to get out of there while we could still see the road, which had potholes the size of my Canyon. So we headed out.
On the way out, a half hour back up the road, we passed a lake that we had been to two weeks earlier and had a very successful day. Limited out and had 30 or more fish on that day, including a few Brookies.
Well, low and behold, the snow was coming straight down and not sideways, so we pulled in and put in a couple of hours, of (as we called it) Lite Fishing ( No food or beer bags). My fishing partner was getting tons of nibbles and I was getting nothing. So I switched over to a leech, with red and blue on the tail and went by a couple of marl segments and started to get some good tugs. It was 4:30, starting to get dark and cooling off a bunch.
Then we were in about 15 ft of water when I got a small tug then a big strike let it set for couple of seconds and hit the trigger on my automatic fly reel and found out the fish wanted nothing to do with coming to the boat! With all my fly line out I managed to get it in past the backing and stripped it in from there. Fifteen minutes of runs and tons of head shakes and it was finally netted and in the boat. It weighed in at 4lbs and was 55cm long. We took a couple more passes with a few nibbles but it was fairly dim and really cold so we packed it in. We have been known to put the headlamps on and stay out, but it was minus 2C now.
We then bumped our way out to the main road and headed back to the Toll booth where another foot of snow had fallen during the day. Pulled in the driveway around 11:00ish, dog tired but happy!
Now we will be looking to next year to do more exploring in that area.
