A Pineapple Express had been blowing through Kamloops over Christmas on the 27th, giving us excellent winter weather conditions. KJ and I grabbed the spinning rods and headed out to Cooney Bay on Kamloops Lake. There are a couple of accesses and we took the high path as we headed out to the rock face on the west end of the bay, searching for large rainbow or bull trout that may be moving in for a feed.
It was a gorgeous day... just a light wind from the east at times and a comfortable 8C to 10C temperature. We found a spot on the rocks and started fishing about 11:15am. We were by ourselves for the first couple of hours, casting out various lures like the "red devil", "5 of diamonds" and "buzz bombs" but nothing was biting. We watched geese enjoying the balmy weather, as were a pair of western grebes.
Early in the afternoon a young dad (Warren) and his 3'ish old daughter, Shyla came by and joined us. They, like us, went biteless. Shyla proved to be a monkey in the rocks. We finally packed it in around 3pm... the sun goes down early at this time of the year and it was a 20 minute hike back to the truck. When we did get back to the truck there was another truck that pulled up and the guys were heading down for the evening fish. Popular spot, even at this time of the year.
