Gearing Up Kylee's Ready to Start Casting Chiara (front) and Kylee Working Their Magic at the Dock Uncle Dave with Kylee, Chiara and Nash Knowlton

With water temperatures of 70F/21C fishing has slowed in the smaller lakes. The weather has been great here in the Kamloops area and with relatives in the area at Tobiano, I thought that I would do a little spin fishing from the dock with my great-nieces, Kylie( age 8) and Chiara (age 7).

Kylie fished with me last year and caught her first fish then and apparently she has been practicing her casting and was eager to show me how well she could do. She was good for her word too as she was able to toss her lure out 30'-40'and without getting too many tangles.

Chiara is a bit of a free spirit and at first she knew how to do everything but later she needed some help. While Kylie was using an open faced reel, Chiara was given the push-button closed faced reel. It took her a little while to figure out the release and ended up getting a few decent casts in. Soon she will be able to toss a lure as well as her sister.

Safety was a bit of an issue. 3 kids, 4 adults and 1 dog wandering around the dock had me constantly reminding everyone about thinking what they are doing when they decided to move or park themselves. Luckily, we all got away hook-free at the end of it all.

We didn't catch anything but rumor has it that there have been a few nice fish caught in the area in the last couple of weeks. There certainly were schools of baitfish around and the odd small trout jumping out of the water. It was a beautiful evening and a lot of fun and great to see the kids take part and work at getting proficient. I'm sure that we will give it another go in the near future.
