Kamloops Fishing Lakes - June 4 2010

The chironomid fishing has been good around local lakes... especially if you can match the hatch. As my good friend Mo Bradley told me, the size of the chironomids hatching gradually increase in size through out the summer, with the "bombers" starting in late July (Leighton and Tunkwa Lake are renowned for them).
So, look for medium sized (size 12-14)chironomids. They can be quite different at each lake but one pattern that seems to endure is the chromie... with either a red rib or a black rib and a white bead head. Black chironomids with a red rib and white bead head also do well
In darker waters try a green rib on a black chironomid with white bead head.
The chironomids seem to be coming out of 20' to 26' deep water so you need a dry line with a long leader (20'+). Some guys are using a strike indicator but you don't need one. The alternative to getting you down deeper is to try wet line chironomids.
Watch out for mayflies... they should be starting any day... when the sun comes out. A tip that I received a long time ago was that mayfly fishing in our local lakes gets really good around the same time as the poplar fuzz is coming off the trees... try a weightless mayfly and let it drift with the wind just below the surface.
Hope the weather improves... it's been raining a bit most days and on some days the wind is troublesome.
