In Praise of the Pumpkinhead

Pumpkinhead produces at Bleeker
Lost my head to a Pumpkinhead
The Pumpkinhead has proved to be a prolific producer for me lately. Prior to using this fly I was experiencing fall fishing frustration.
I had my best results on Bleeker after using the Pumpkinhead. I then took the Pumpkinhead to Pass. I had an excellent morning, catching and releasing about 20 fish although I didn't land a trophy over 20 inches. For about an hour, it was a fish a cast while other fishermen beside me were not catching anything until I told them I was using the Pumpkinhead. I was casting the Pumpkinhead near the weeds on a floating line and the fish hammered it almost as soon as I began a retrieve.
I tried the Pumkinhead at Jacko on Oct 27 to give it a true test. Jacko has been very poor for me this year yielding only small fish, spawners and skunkings. I could see fish rising near the shore so I cast the Pumpkinhead into the shore in only 2 to four feet of water. Sure enough it yielded half a dozen fish with another half a dozen strikes or lost fish. The biggest was 20 inches with a couple more 18 inchers. The fish were gorging on shrimp but couldn't resist the Pumpkinhead.
Much like the Booby fly, the Pumpkinead is an attractor and has a funny name. However, it can be used in very shallow water and the hackle is somewhat effective as a weed guard, allowing you to bounce the fly through the weeds or over the bottom.
Prior to this year I was reluctant to use this fly since I didn't know what it was supposed to be and hadn't experienced much success with it, despite other fishermen swearing by them. Now I'm a convert after having experienced the prolific production of the powerful Pumpkinhead.
