You can houseboat the Shuswap starting just one hour west of the Rogers Pass along the Trans Canada Highway (one of the most scenic drives in BC), at Sicamous BC. The houseboating season starts in May and carries all the way through the summer to mid-October.You can usually get better rental rates in the spring and fall (after the Sept Labour Day Weekend).
The spring brings the opportunity of catching big fish, trolling with lures or plugs. The snow is melting from the mountain tops giving spectacular views of peaks and waterfalls, especially in the more remote parts of the lake.
The summer season brings endless days of bright sunshine, warming the lake for a variety of water recreational activities. The water traffic is rather busy in and out of port but with over 900 kms of shoreline it doesn't take long to find a spot all your own.
The fall brings warm days and it is a little cooler at night. The traffic thins substantially and along with the fall colours, the salmon spawning runs start. The Adams River on the north shore near Scotch Creek is world famous for its incredible sockeye salmon run which starts in mid-Sept and continues through the Canadian Thanksgiving Weekend in October. The fall is also a fantastic time for wildlife viewing, particularly for bears (mostly black bears with the remote chance of seeing grizzly) and eagles (both bald and golden)as they too enjoy the banquet of spawning salmon.
A note of interest, all Pacific salmon die after they spawn. It's their cycle of life.
Houseboat Rentals
There is no shortage of house boat rental companies to choose from. It pays to shop around. Many companies, as well as having their own fleet act as rental agents for private houseboat owners and may rent other toys like power boats, ski-boats and sea-doos.
The Sicamous area has the largest concentration of rental operations but rentals are also available in Sorrento/Blind Bay.
