Ask any seasoned fly fisherman and they will have their own fly fishing strategies for their favorite BC lakes and streams. In this section we will give you a few of our own strategies that we use effectively in the Kamloops Area lakes as well as strategies used by others in different locations within the province and around North America.
The Kamloops area fly fishing lakes are usually small to medium in size ranging from 10 to 100 hectares. The typical trophy lakes may have blue-green water with marl bottom and weedy shoals or they may be dark tea-coloured bodies with lily pads, rocky shores and steep drop-offs.
Whatever the lake shape and structure offers, it's nice to know that others have tried and true strategies that enable them to take fish on a regular basis. From fly fishing basics to expert fly fishing strategies we hope our articles willhelp improve your fly fishing vacation experience.

Dry Line a Micro Leech with a Strike Indicator
An interesting "fly fishing technique" to emerge in the "Kamloops Lakes" over recent years is the use of a micro-leech "trout fly pattern" on a dry line with a "strike indicator".
These days, one of the popular ways to fish this trout fly pattern is to suspend the micro-leech just above a weed bed or shallow bottom area using a strike indicator. It seemed odd at first but when you think about it, it make's good sense.

Long Leaders 2 - Fly Fishing the Shallows with Hyalella Shrimp
My favorite fly fishing technique in the late summer/ early fall is performed with a dry line and long leader in rather shallow water using a tiny "hyalella shrimp".
The onset of cooler weather triggers the fish to start their pre-winter gorge. Hyalella shrimp are plentiful in marl bottoms and along the shallow weed beds. In many of the Kamloops lakes you will find fish cruising in as shallow as 2 feet of water, adding "sight fishing" to dramatically intensify the experience. A good pair of polaroid glasses come in real handy too!

Dry Line with a Long Leader
One of the most effective ways to fly fish for rainbow trout in Kamloops Area Lakes is to use a a "long leader" with a dry (floating) line while fishing a bloodworm or chironimid fly pattern.
It took a long time for me to develop the patience and will to use a longer leader but when I did, my success increased immensely. To most river fisherman or novice fly casters, anything over a 9 foot leader seems pretty long but it doesn't come close to the 18'- 25' leaders that we use here in the trophy lakes.
