Sunset - Driving Home from Duffy Lake
It was a breezy day with mixed weather, including a few light rain showers. I was not only in the bad weather but I was under the weather with a nasty cold virus... I probably shouldn't have been on the water but my head was so plugged up I couldn't concentrate enough to work on my computer... in addition... there was a major feed in the afternoon and I expected to get into some action.
There were only a few people on the lake... many more camping and dirt biking/quadding in the area. I wasn't having any luck with my dry line and long leader so I moved out into some deeper water (27') and tried some wet line chironomid fishing at about 23 ft. There were only some small midges coming off the water so I dropped a small #15 black and silver chironomid down beside the boat as my 2nd line... It soon became my main focus as I had a hit in the first 5 minutes and landed my first fish within 10 minutes... nothing of any size.. 14"... but the fight was incredible.
My biggest challenge for the day was keeping the fish from going under the boat between the 2 anchors... I wasn't as successful as I would have liked. At the end of the day, I lost as many fish around my anchor as I brought to the boat... including a beautiful rainbow in the 4-5lb range that finally broke off just as I was lifting my anchor to clear the way.
As I fumbled through the day I managed to ... lose a great pair of wear-over sunglasses and drop 2 rods in the water (I got them both back ... I was on the shoal at the time).
final tally... 4 fish to the boat... all on wet line, chironomids, straight up and down beside the boat.
