April 27th First Attempt at Knouff This Year

by Shawn Proznick
(Kamloops)

I was looking forward to this day for awhile as I had booked this day as a me day a few weeks ago and had plans to jump on the motorbike and go from Kamloops to Kelowna for lunch. The weather changed my plans a bit. I rolled out of bed and saw water everywhere. My riding buddy Bill called and said forget the ride, he wasn't into getting soaked. I suggested that he get his fishing gear together and come over to my house and we could at least have coffee and assess the situation from there.

By the time Bill got to my place, the rain had stopped and the sky had some light patches. Nice, we packed the tin boat onto the back of my my truck and started up towards Knouff Lake. There was rain on and off on the way up and a bit of snow in small patches as we got to the resort. We got out of the truck to stop in at the office, one to pay for the use of the boat launch and two, to see if there had been any action to speak of since the ice came off. As luck would have it, the office was locked up and nobody around. Oh well, we would have to use what we brought for flies and try our luck.

We got unloaded and into the water around 12:15, about when the solunar table suggested that we be on the water and wouldn't you know it, there was movement in the water! Fish were nosing just out from the wharf towards the first island, nothing jumping, just moving enough o let us know that they were there. I had rigged up a proven "Guaranteed" onto a wet line while Bill went with a smaller brown leech. We started off dragging the lines back and forth amidst the nosing action, attracting a few nudges but nothing that bent the rod at all. After about 45 minutes of nothing at all, we decided to head out into the trolling path that runs along the roadway.

I left my line as it was but Bill tried another dark leach for the trip up the lake. During the slow ride, we saw several pairs of low flying Canadian geese, ducks along the shoreline and a few loons watching to see if we had anything for them to steal. The lake was pretty quiet, us being the only boat on the water. It was a brisk afternoon with a slight breeze from the South. The water temp was reading 43 degrees and water visibility was not bad/ I could see the shallows fairly clearly to about 5 feet.

We got to the South end of the lake and I put on a red and purple kissing leach while Bill grabbed another pattern that I didn't see. Whatever he grabbed, it didn't change our luck. It had been several years since Bill and I had seen each other so we got a great chance to catch up on life as we trolled/dredged ( I may have hooked a few weeds) the lake, with the fish thoughtfully leaving us alone. Again, no real action other than a bump or two.

The afternoon was starting to get a bit chilly, no real sun to speak of and we did end up with a bit of a sprinkle, just enough to make us feel cold. We decided to start for the dock, calling it a day. No fish but a relaxing afternoon none the less.

As far as Knouff Lake goes, I have personally not been able to catch a single fish from this lake. I know that they are there, I have seen others take them and I have seen them juming, mocking me. I will take one this year!! Next time Knouff Lake....next time!!

Knouff Lake is TOAST NEW
by: Doug D

I used to fish Knouff ,lots, years ago - about 1995 to 2002. Unless things have changed this lake is ruined. The resort owners made it into a destination resort for corporate getaways. They added a huge camp ground, dozens of picnic tables and agressively marketed it particularly to companies. So, they would get , for example, Reimer Freightways or John Deere to have their employee getaway at the lake. You would get the place flooded with ocean rigged boats, with mum and pop and their 6 kids dragging flies around the lake. The worst thing was that they would have fishing contests with a "hidden" prize no matter what the fish size. As a result every fish caught was killed.
The fishery went into the tank. No fish of any size was left.
Things might have changed. But I think the days of catching decent fish during a sedge hatches are long gone.
If anyone has info to the contrary I would love to know as this is one of the nicest lake in B.C.
I have great memories of fishing to midnight with sedges and catching great fish.

Doug, Knouff lake has always been a finicky lake for me, although I don't fish it very often.
I do agree with you about fishing derbies. If they are not managed well they can really hurt the lake stock.
Perhaps that's an issue that our provincial fisheries should consider... having resorts or companies apply for the right hold a derby, limit the number of derbies allowed on any particular lake, and limit the take. Problem is, the ministry of environment doesn't have enough money to adequately enforce what they already have on their plate... although the issue of bag limits has tightened up over the years in many lakes, including the standard lakes which are now a 5 fish limit (on trout in Region 3). When I started fishing in BC in the early 1980's it was 8 fish per day.
Your comment is appreciated... thanks.
