A few hours to kill........Aug 20

by Shawn Proznick
(Kamloops)

What?... Me Worry?

What?... Me Worry?

My phone rang and woke me up.

It was work and they were offering me a promotion!! NICE ! Of course I accepted.

Now I was in a celebratory mood. Unfortunately my wife and kids were out of town so how was I going to live it up? I had just the answer. With rest of the morning and early afternoon to kill before nap time and the night shift, I was going to try and bring home a trophy!

I made a quick breakfast and hopped into the truck and off to my newly found favorite lake. As I rounded the last corner before the loading ramp what did I see, none other than the truck of Mr. BFSH! Nice # 2! I quickly unloaded my gear and set afloat in the tin boat. After only 30 seconds on the water I realized that this would be a slow day for me......not much power left in the battery, perfect trolling speed as I was wide open on the throttle.

Through the smokey haze (over 250 forest fires currently burning in BC) I could see Mr BFSH anchored in a bay across the lake. Slowly, I worked the shore line, with the goal to hook up with Dave and see how his day was going. My rod tip dipped once but I was unable to hook up. There was no other action on my rod as I got close to Dave, but he was into a fish. Before I could see the fish, he had let it back to grow some more.

Fish were sounding on the finder so I found a nice spot far enough from Dave to not disturb his lines but close enough that we could chat a bit. I set my self up with 2 lines; one floating with a 20' leader and a root-beer bloodworm, one sinking with a 2 tone brown buggerish looking thing. I placed each line pointing out the back of the boat, one in each corner. Then I sat back in my chair and watched the fish swim on by on my fish finder.

Dave moved his spot a bit as he had not had any good returns on his finder after I showed up (sorry Dave). We both double anchored and started to have a good conversation as we watched our lines.

We were there for about 45 minutes, lots of fish cruising, again they were just above the thermocline, none of them touching our lines when one decided that it was hungry!

My 7# rod bent hard and as I grabbed it and set the hook I knew that I was into a good one. As I lifted on the rod to get the tip into the air, the rod just bent over more! Nice # 3. Then the fish crossed under my 2nd rod. I bent down and picked up the rod and as I had 2 rods in my hand, the fish ran at the boat. Before I could drop the empty rod and take in the slack........he was gone. Lesson learned. The next time I put 2 line in the water, 1 goes out the back and the other goes out the side.

I spent another 45 minutes or so there before I had to row back to the launch and pack up. Although the air was a bit smokey, The lake was perfect place to kill a few hours and relax.

Quiet After You Left NEW
by: mr BFSH

Shawn... it was quiet after you left with the breeze changing directions quite a few times... Only one touch on the blood worm.

and Ron W... the surface temperature was 66/67F.

Even though the fishing was slow, the wildlife action was exciting. The eagles nest was attacked by three cruising turkey vultures. While one vulture captured the female adult's attention and a second kept the large but still inexperienced young eagle at bay while the 3rd closed in to steal a kill sitting in the nest or near it.

They were bobbing and weaving through the tree tops with a lot of squawking going. Finally the female eagle got back to the nest after the vultures got what they wanted.

I got some footage but I haven't downloaded it yet. If it's any good I will post it here on the blog.

How warm was the water? NEW
by: Ron W

Congratulations on your promotion. Did you or Dave happen to take a temperature reading of the water? I'm waiting for the temps to drop below 65F before I hit the water again. The fish are just too sluggish when it's warmer.

I notice that the LacleJeune and Sheridan webcam/weather stations now include water temperature readings which will be very helpful.
