6 Mile Lake Apr 19 2010

Fish Counting at Six Mile Lake

Fish Counting at Six Mile Lake

After a 4 straight days of hockey, I just had to get out and cast a line. It was a gorgeous day when I left the house and was intent on fishing either Morgan Lake or Six Mile Lake.

When I arrived at 6 Mile Lake there was a stiff east breeze and not as inviting as I had hoped. There was a University of Calgary pickup truck there with 3 students getting ready to hit the water to check some nets that they had set for a study of some sort. We chatted it up a bit and I shared some information about the lake then headed to Morgan to see if it was more fishable than 6 Mile. It wasn't. The wind was blowing right down the middle and it looked a little rough. I turned around and headed back to Six Mile.

So, after wasting about a half and hour, I finally started gearing up. I was in no hurry as the water was pretty rough with the wind. There was very little shelter and where there was, the kids from U of C had nets planted. I was stuck having to anchor in the open water. Trolling was almost impossible with my electric motor.

As I moved closer to the east end of the lake I started to see quite a hatch of very small, light-green chironomids. I hooked up 2 dry lines with strike indicators and anchored near the dam control in about 12' of water, casting to 15' where I picked up lots of fish on the fish finder. To say the least, it was slow and frustrating. The wind was playing havoc with my lines and on occasionally blowing me off my anchor. I stayed in that area for quite a while and ended up catching a fish an hour. The first fish that I caught was 17.5". I pumped it before I released it and it was full of the tiny chironomids.

About mid-afternoon I headed for the west end of the lake to get some shelter and ended up anchoring right in front of one of the nets that were set. I hit a couple of small fish there on the chironomid (green with red butt, white head and peacock hurl thorax).

About 4:30 pm I moved back to the dam area and started hitting fish, again on the same chironomid. It slowed after a couple of fish and I moved to the bay in front of the first boat launch. I pulled in one of my dry lines and decided to try the booby fly (I had been holding off all day). Wouldn't you know it... first cast, then 2nd cast... fish. To my recollection, the solunar tables indicated that there was a major feed to happen some time around 5:30pm and it appeared to have shown up just in time.

I had a ball sitting there. 2 double headers. Most were small but we did end up landing a few more fish in the 18" range. A couple of people were fishing from shore and they started doing well too... as did the other 2 boats on the lake.

By 7pm the bite died down and it was time to head home... the frickin wind was still blowing but at least it settled enough for us to catch a few fish after a tough day on the water.
--------

The water temperature was up considerably from 2 weeks ago... 51F. The water clarity was normal. Lots of weeds/grasses floating around as usual... it's not hard to understand why when you anchor and get blown around... the weeds come up with the anchor.

Keep your eyes peeled for our Tobiano Golf contest... any entries by you, the public, to the 2010 Journal will qualify for a draw for Free Golf for 2 at Tobiano, including cart. I don't know about you but if I'm not fishing, I like to golf and Tobiano is absolutely one of the finest courses that I have ever set foot on. Any entries to the Journal (not comments) will qualify you to be entered into the draw.
More details to come.
