2010.08.10 Small Fry on BIG FLY

Ron and a 21.5 inch Small Fry? (Rainbow Trout)
I had the opportunity to visit a trophy lake with Mr Big Fish and his friend Shawn. This lake grows fish fast and has produced some monsters in the past. However, it suffered a kill recently so the fish have not had a chance to grow back to monstrous proportions. Nevertheless, I was humming the theme to JAWS as I launched my float boat around 10 am.
There was very little insect activity and a few small fish rising at the surface. Both Mr. BFSH and Shawn were marking fish on their finders just above the thermocline, but I could not entice any of them to bite. I tried various llama leeches, some succulent bloodworms and chironomids, but nothing was working. My fishing companions weren't catching any fish either.
I got a few half-hearted taps on the micro leech but that was it for the morning. After a few hours I went in for lunch and a pit stop before trying again. It had been drizzling off and on for most of the morning but the heavy rain stayed away and the wind was relatively calm so I couldn't complain about the weather.
Around 3 pm I switched to the biggest dragonfly in my box and finally had a solid hookup. The fish didn't jump but kept shaking its head and doggedly swimming sideways without going on any big runs. I could tell it had some weight to it, but it fought like it would rather be resting in a bed of tomato rice with browned beans than swimming with the rest of the fishes. I hadn't sharpened that hook in quite a while and was fishing barbless the so the lack of a spirited fight was the only thing that allowed me to land the fish. I'm not sure if it was obesity, heat stress or a combination that accounted for the sluggish behavior but I can report that it tasted good.
I think I'll give this lake a pass until the water cools down in the fall and the fish have had a chance to grow bigger. After catching and releasing Walter in
Jacko Lake last fall my standards for big fish have risen. This one was a minnow by comparison at 21.5 inches and four and a half pounds.
