2010.06.18 Llama Leech Lucky at LacLeJeune

Last Saturday I went to the downtown farmer's market and came across a couple selling llama hair. They had small packages in black, brown and white which are the natural colours of their animals. They explained to me that although the hair looks like human hair, it is hollow and floats, which gives it good action in the water. Local fly fishing legend,
Mo Bradley, had been extolling the virtues of llama hair when I talked with him while he was tying at
Surplus Herby's so I decided to buy a package. I thought that the black and brown would make excellent leeches although the white could be dyed any colour.
When I got to Lac le Jeune there was evidence of a caddis hatch so I went with a green caddis pupa on the sinking line and a small black llama leech on a sinking tip. I trolled and cast around the reeds and weed beds where I saw fish rising and caddis scurrying on the surface. I had quite a few bites and hooked several small ones on the caddis.
I just left the micro-leech dangling while I cast the caddis, but it worked well. I landed 4 fish on the leech including the two biggest of the day and lost a couple more. The llama fibers move seductively in the water so I think I'll tie up some more leeches and think of ways to incorporate the llama hair into other patterns.
