Brookie on yellow caddis
It was a pleasant Sunday drive up to Red Lake. I saw a lot of wildlife on the trip including California Big Horns, deer, and various birds of prey. When I arrived at the parking area it was almost full and a couple of boats were leaving. One couple had caught one rainbow while the other had hooked one brook trout for the morning. The water was still a bit murky from turnover and the nutrient rich mix that is Red.
I launched around 11:00 am and noticed very small chironomids coming off. I didn't have anything that small so tried a size 14 chromie. After about half an hour I hooked one but after a dogged struggle I lost him. Shortly after I caught a small fat brookie on a red micro leech. The fishing seemed to die for approx an hour after that as I tried a few other chironomids and leech patterns without success. After a few half-hearted strikes and one small one released I switched to a yellow caddis tied by Mr. Big Fish. It has shiny ribbing and flash in the tail so I was using it more as an attractor pattern since it's too early in the season for sedges to emerge. After a few casts in front of the launch area I had a solid strike and finally managed to land a nice fat 18 inch brookie. Fishing seemed to be slow for all the fishermen I talked with so I was happy to leave with a couple for dinner.
